The platysma muscles in the neck control chewing and speech in humans and act to pull the jaw downwards towards the neck. This action can cause the appearance of a sagging neck and adds to a more aged appearance. Very experienced practioner are able to safely administer Botulinum toxin into the platysma muscle which prevents it from pulling the skin downwards. This procedure is becoming more popular as the neck is normally a big give away to the true age of a person. This very specialized procedure is often referred to as the Botox neck lift.
How is it Used?
Neck Bands: Excessively prominent or hanging neck muscle bands at the front of the neck and under the chin can very effectively be reduced by injecting small amounts of Botox directly into them. A few days following the injection, the bands just appear to fade away, resulting in an often dramatically improved silhouette.
A further development of this has been the so called "Nefertiti Lift". For this, the botulinum is injected into the neck bands at the front of the neck, as well as the side bands that insert into the angle of the jaw. These side bands are what pull down on the lower side of the face and aggrevate the jowls, and by injecting these the bands relax, the jowls reduce and the lower face lifts. This has the effect of streamlining the neck and narrowing and lifting the heavy lower face; a bit like the neck of Queen Nefertiti.
