Over in the US, some dentists have suggested that wearing a face mask can lead to oral hygiene issues, such as bad breath. However, as The Sun reported, the British Dental Association (BDA) has stated that there are likely to be many other factors leading to a deterioration in oral hygiene rather than wearing a face mask. Professor Damian Walmsley, scientific adviser at the BDA, said that claims in the US that wearing masks is bad for your dental health are politically motivated.

“Recent claims on ‘mask mouth’ are risible. East Asian societies, where face coverings have been ubiquitous for decades, are not confronting an epidemic of decay,” he asserted.

He also pointed out that dentists themselves spend most of their days wearing masks while treating patients and “we’re not exactly at the front of the queue for extractions”.

Instead, Professor Walmsley said that lockdown diets and a lack of access to dental services in recent months are much more likely to be behind any oral health problems that people are facing.

As we recently pointed out, wearing a mask may, however, have made you more aware if you suffer from bad breath, for instance.

If you’ve discovered that this is an issue for you, there are a number of ways in which you can improve the situation. One of the most important steps is to focus on your oral hygiene. That means correct and regular brushing, flossing and using mouthwash.
